Comments on Department of Transportation Notice of Intent to Prepare Environmental Impact Statement for New Medium- and Heavy-duty Vehicle Fuel Economy Standards
The Consumer Federation of America is extremely encouraged by the publication of this Notice of Intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement in support of Phase II of the fuel economy standards. CFA has been actively involved in the process of setting standards for fuel economy for light duty vehicles for over thirty years. In the past decade, we have presented research and provided expert testimony to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in addition to conducting over a dozen public opinion polls examining consumer attitudes toward these standards. We have concluded the fuel economy standards save consumers money and, given that, we are not surprised to find that fuel economy standards enjoy broad public support.
