Consumer Advocates Urge Maryland to Make Homeowners Insurance More Available and Affordable

CFA TC

The Consumer Federation of America and Economic Action Maryland sent a letter to the Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) urging the agency to take steps to make homeowners insurance more available and affordable for Maryland consumers. In recent months residents of coastal counties have been told that many insurance companies will no longer provide coverage for them.

The consumer advocates urged MIA to provide guidance for the insurance industry on managing systemic risks due to climate change. Insurers should also provide discounts to consumers who undertake mitigation measures to reduce risk, and MIA should require public information about the discounts offered by the companies.
