Consumer Advocates Pressure Louisiana to Collect More Data on Rising Insurance Costs and Discounts Offered to Consumers

CFA TC

The Consumer Federation of America, HousingNOLA, and Real Reform Louisiana sent a letter to Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple, urging him to protect consumers, help policyholders and policymakers better understand the homeowners insurance market, and help them make informed decisions that are critically important to sustainable homeownership in Louisiana.

The letter asks that Louisiana collect additional information on rising homeowners insurance costs and the discounts that companies give to consumers who undertake measures to reduce risk (such as strengthening their roofs against hurricanes and storms). It also requests that Louisiana participate in the data call on rising insurance costs organized by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. Finally, the organizations call for the establishment of an Insurable Homes Commission that would study flood insurance, mitigation efforts, and other reinsurance costs.
