CFA joined the National Consumers League and the Center for Science in the Public Interest in submitting the following letter to U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin. The Treasury Department’s Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) recently proposed a rule on “Modernization of the Labeling and Advertising Regulations for Wine, Distilled Spirits, and Malt Beverages.” Incredibly, the proposed rule does not include uniform requirements for alcoholic beverage manufactures to label ingredients, calories, or even alcohol by volume, despite polling showing that upwards of 90% of U.S. adults want to see that information on drink labels. The letter urges Secretary Mnuchin to instruct the TTB to withdraw the proposed rule and to issue a new proposal providing a mandatory, standardized declaration covering alcohol content by percentage and amount, serving size, calories, ingredients, allergen information, and other information relevant to consumers.
