CFA Supports Front-of-Pack Labeling to Reduce Ultra-Processed Foods in American Diets

Consumer Federation of America submitted the following comments in support of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s proposed rule to require front-of-package nutrition labeling on foods. As the comments note, FDA’s proposal to implement a mandatory, interpretive front-of-package nutrition labeling (FOPNL) system that highlights nutrients to limit—saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars—will help to steer consumers towards healthier alternatives to ultra-processed foods. The comments urge FDA to strengthen the rule by requiring disclosures for low and no-calorie sweeteners, and to follow up with complementary rulemaking that defines standards for foods labeled “not ultra-processed” or “less processed.”
