The Consumer Federation of America and almost 100 other consumer protection and public interest groups signed a letter to the Department of Labor (DOL) opposing a proposed rule that would require states to provide sensitive data that unemployment insurance agencies collect. The letter requests that the rule be withdrawn until the DOL clarifies what data will be collected, the need for the data, and how the data will be used. The groups also ask that the department explain how it will protect the privacy of the people whose data it collects, as this proposed rule could harm workers, threaten data security, and waste federal, state, and taxpayer dollars for unnecessary and even duplicative processes.
