Consumer Federation of America has submitted comments asking the United States Trade Representative to negotiate concessions with Canada and Mexico that clear the path for reinstatement of Country of Origin Labeling requirements for beef and pork (COOL). Until recently, COOL required labels on beef and pork products to inform consumers of where the source animal was born, raised, and slaughtered.  Canada and Mexico, however, challenged COOL as an unlawful trade barrier before the World Trade Organization (WTO), and less than two weeks after the WTO ruled in their favor, Congress repealed the law. CFA urged the Administration to follow through on President Trump’s campaign promises to avoid trade deals that “undermine our independence” and allow trade tribunals to make “decisions the American people can’t veto.”
