CFA Along With Other Consumer and Privacy Groups Sent a Joint Letter to California State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson Opposing AB 846 Unless It Is Amended
CFA joined other consumer and privacy groups in a letter to California state Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson on June 26, 2019 opposing AB 846 unless it is amended. AB 846 would allow loyalty clubs to coerce consumers into disclosing their personal information, on threat of paying a higher price, and then sell that personal information to other businesses. Additionally, AB 846 would create a vague and overbroad exception from the California Consumer Protection Act's (CCPA) non-discrimination rule for services whose “functionality” is directed related to the collection, use, and sale of personal information, which apparently would exempt adtech activity from the CCPA.
