Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released new dishwasher standards to increase energy efficiency and help consumers’ wallets. Approximately 75% of U.S. household have a dishwasher. According to DOE calculations, consumers will save $3.2 billion on utility bills over 30 years. The savings will benefit everyone, particularly low-income households and renters. The price of dishwashers is not expected to increase because no physical modifications are required. Further, the standards will not decrease dishwashers’ cleaning performance.  

"The Department of Energy’s new efficiency standards for dishwashers are a significant victory for both consumers and the environment. The standards will save consumers money on their energy and water bills, while also reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 9.4 million metric tons,” said Courtney Griffin, Director of Consumer Product Safety at Consumer Federation of America. “The standards require simple changes that will positively impact most households.”
