CFA Statement on the FTC’s Corporate Pardon of Rytr, Who Facilitates AI-Generated Fake Reviews at Scale

Washington, D.C. — The Consumer Federation of America released the following statement in response to the Federal Trade Commission’s decision to vacate a 2024 order that addressed Rytr’s product that facilitates the creation of unlimited fake reviews using Generative AI, violating the law against unfair and deceptive trade practices as well as rules against fake reviews that harm both consumers and small businesses.

“The FTC’s decision is yet another that puts tech company profits over people,” said Ben Winters, Director of AI and Privacy at the Consumer Federation of America. “This decision sends a message to Americans that fake reviews or other deceptive content created at scale is okay as long as you’re a tech company using AI. It’s a green light for scammers.”

Last year when the enforcement action was finalized, CFA, along with the Electronic Privacy Information Center and the National Consumers League, explained why this case is so important.
